The Comeback — a day-by-day companion for the months after orthopedic surgery. By Vallecito Labs, Portland, Oregon.
What it is
Someone recovering from orthopedic surgery sees their surgeon a handful of times across a year and their physical therapist a couple of times a week. The rest of the year is spent alone with a question nobody is in the room to answer: is this normal right now? The Comeback answers it one day at a time — a single pre-written, date-stamped card keyed to the surgery date and to the surgical details that genuinely change the timeline. It is a comprehension product: it describes what recovery typically feels like, names what is worth raising with the care team, and hands every clinical decision back to the surgeon and the physical therapist. It is not medical advice, and it is not a medical device.

What's different
- Written for everyone who has the surgery. Software in this category is almost uniformly written for young people going back to hard physical activity. The Comeback's default voice assumes someone getting back to work, sleep, and ordinary life — the 58-year-old whose shoulder went. Narrower framing exists, but the reader turns it on; it is never the default.
- One-time price, by design. A recovery ends. Charging a monthly fee to someone who is finished healing is the wrong shape for the thing, so nothing renews.
- On-device, by design. There is no account and no server. Photos and the recovery record stay on the phone; progress photos are excluded from device backups entirely.
Accessibility
Dynamic Type, iPad, and dark mode are first-class, not afterthoughts. The app is legible at the largest accessibility text sizes, lays out properly on iPad, and was designed dark-first.
